The Birthing "Bag": this list contains the contents of my birthing 'bag' and stuff to have close by. Mine is nothing fancy (just a paper bag with handles) kept by the house door and then brought out to the birth.

In the bag:

  • Telephone List (vet, state veterinary school, friends, etc.)
  • Driving directions to vet/vet school.
  • "J Lube" (dry powder mixed with sterile water for lube)
  • Sterile water (previously boiled) in clean 12 oz. bottles
  • Two unopened large tubes of "K-Y" lubricant
  • Flashlight (check batteries!)
  • Sterile surgical gloves, sterile shoulder length gloves
  • Inexpensive stethoscope (learn to use before birth)
  • Glucometer (blood glucose - normal is over 150 mg/dl)
  • Unscented anti-bacterial wipes (clean udders before nursing)
  • Roll of vet wrap (wrap tail of dam before birth)
  • Pack of 4x4 gauze (to stop bleeding of umbilical stump)
  • Iodine (7%) or Chlorhexidine (disenfiction of navel)
  • Umbilical tape (NOT clamp) for navel (if bleeding)
  • White shoelaces (1/4"x36" - to pull cria)
  • Digital rectal thermometer (check batteries)
  • Calcium paste (for oral use - if contractions cease)
  • 10 ml syringe in capped plastic container (for Karo Syrup)
  • 50/60 ml catheter tip syringe (for oral feeding tube)
  • Bottle of "Karo" brand light syrup (for weak crias)
  • Oral pediatric electrolyte solution (Pedialyte, etc.-for weak crias)
  • Cell phone (charged!), cordless house phone (charged!)
  • Clean bath sized towels (to catch cria on)
  • Roll of paper towels

Have on hand:

  • Several two-quart heavy duty plastic rice bags (for microwave warming)
  • Small cria sweaters and jackets (yes, both)
  • Small oxygen tank (get at any pharmacy)
  • Gatoraid (powder, lemon-lime)
  • Dr. Rob Pollard lactation herbs
  • Fish scale and woven "mesh type" laundry back (for weighing cria)
  • Electric hot air type hair dryer and extension cord
  • Empty clean plastic bottles with "Pritchard" type nipples
  • Emergency drugs (oxytocin, etc.)

In refrigerator or freezer:

  • Whole cow's milk (4%)
  • Active culture yogurt (not low fat, plain or vanilla)
  • E-Coli Anitbody and Clostridium Perfringens Type C Antitoxin (Exolizer+C)
  • Fresh CD&T vaccine
  • Bag of fresh (less than 1 year) hyper-imunized camelid plasma (for transfusion)
  • Bottle of Champagne!!!
